LitRPG Reading Orders: 10 Series, Every Book in Order

LitRPG reading orders for 10 series in one place: books out, latest release, finished or ongoing, and audiobook hours per series, checked October 10, 2026.

14 min readLast reviewed By LevelUpShelf Editorial
Book one covers of Dungeon Crawler Carl, Cradle, He Who Fights with Monsters, The Primal Hunter and The Wandering Inn in a row

These LitRPG reading orders cover the 10 series we track in one place: how many books are out, the latest release, whether the series is finished, and how long it runs on audio. Every count below was checked against the publisher, Amazon, Audible or the author's own page on October 10, 2026, and each series links to its full guide with every book, date and narrator. No plot spoilers.

TL;DR: Read every series here by its book number; none needs a special order. Three are finished (Cradle, Mark of the Fool, Mother of Learning). The 10 series add up to 108 audiobooks and 2,547 hours on Audible. The Wandering Inn is the longest by far; Beware of Chicken is the shortest.

Key Takeaways

  • 10 series, 108 audiobooks, 2,547 hours 42 minutes on Audible, by our sum of each book's length.
  • Three are finished: Cradle, Mark of the Fool and Mother of Learning.
  • Seven are still going: new books or chapters were dated in 2026 for Defiance of the Fall, He Who Fights with Monsters, The Primal Hunter, The Wandering Inn, Beware of Chicken and Mage Tank; Dungeon Crawler Carl has no book 9 date yet.
  • Number order works for all ten. The traps are edition dates, new formats and extras, not the main order.
  • Upcoming: The Wandering Inn book 20 on audio (November 3, 2026), The Primal Hunter 17 (November 18, 2026 Kindle pre-order), Beware of Chicken 6 (December 8, 2026 per Podium), Mage Tank 6 (March 17, 2027 Kindle pre-order), Defiance of the Fall 18 (September 8, 2027 Kindle pre-order). Pre-orders checked October 13, 2026.

Overview: how to use these LitRPG reading orders

LitRPG and progression fantasy series are long and most are still being written. As one r/ProgressionFantasy commenter put it in May 2026: "Most progression fantasy is written serially, and this leads to a different pace than traditionally written and edited books" (u/drostandfound, comment, May 19, 2026). That has two practical effects. First, the books carry numbers, so the reading order is rarely the hard part. Second, the questions that matter are the ones around the numbers: is it finished, is the next book dated, does the audio keep up, and which edition is which.

The table gives the answer for each series in one line. Below it, each series has a short section with the one thing that trips readers up, and a link to the full guide.

Counts are as of October 10, 2026. "Audio" is our sum of the lengths on each book's Audible page. Each series also gets a hub on our series pages once its guide is live, with a checklist to tick off the books you have read, and dated releases are on the release calendar.

The Series, One by One

Each section lists what is out, what is next, and the one ordering question readers ask most. The linked guide has the full table for that series.

Dungeon Crawler Carl (Matt Dinniman)

Eight books, read in number order. Matt Dinniman's site dates book 1 to September 21, 2020, and Penguin Random House lists book 8, A Parade of Horribles, as "Book 8 of 8", published May 12, 2026. The author's news page gave no date for book 9 when we checked. Jeff Hays narrates all eight audiobooks, about 159 hours 22 minutes in total.

The trap is the edition dates. The Ace paperbacks and hardcovers are recent reprints, so the date on a store page can be years after the book first came out; book 1's current Ace paperback is dated December 30, 2025. The full list is in our Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order.

Cradle (Will Wight)

Twelve volumes, from Unsouled to Waybound, and finished: Will Wight's site gives the series length as "12 volumes, complete". After volume 12 comes Threshold: Stories from Cradle, a short-story collection that Amazon lists as Cradle 13 (paperback January 6, 2026). Travis Baldree reads every volume; the 12 run 134 hours 25 minutes, about 11 hours each, the shortest books in this guide.

Read Threshold last, not between volumes. Our Cradle series reading order has every volume with page counts and ratings.

He Who Fights with Monsters (Shirtaloon)

Thirteen books, the newest out on October 6, 2026 in ebook and audio, per Aethon's product page. Amazon's book 13 page says "Book 13 of 13". Heath Miller narrates all of them for Podium Audio, 292 hours 8 minutes in total. The story is still running as a web serial: Royal Road showed chapters 1025 to 1027 posted between September 28 and October 2, 2026.

The trap: new hardcovers titled Outworlder, Adventurer, Hero and Home are books 1 to 4 in a new edition, not extra books. Details in our He Who Fights with Monsters reading order.

The Primal Hunter (Zogarth)

Sixteen books from Aethon, from March 8, 2022 to The Primal Hunter 16 on July 29, 2026. Travis Baldree narrates the 15 that are on Audible, 298 hours 14 minutes in total. Book 16 had no Audible listing on October 10, 2026, and the audio gap has grown: books 13 to 15 arrived 147 to 189 days after the ebook.

Book 17 is being posted now, and Amazon has The Primal Hunter 17 on Kindle pre-order as "Book 17 of 17" for November 18, 2026. On Royal Road, chapter 1216 is titled "START OF BOOK 17", and the page is marked STUB: its chapter list shows chapters 1 to 8, then picks up again at 1216. Our Primal Hunter reading order covers each book and the audio dates.

Defiance of the Fall (TheFirstDefier)

Seventeen books from Aethon, from June 8, 2021 to book 17 on September 16, 2026 (Amazon Kindle and Audible). Pavi Proczko narrates all 17 on Audible, 397 hours 59 minutes in total, the second-longest series here. For most books the audiobook came out on the same day as the ebook. Royal Road posts three chapters a week; chapter 1,468 went up on October 8, 2026. Amazon has book 18 on Kindle pre-order as "Book 18 of 18" for September 8, 2027.

Seventeen books in a little over five years means a new one every few months, so a book count from a year ago is already wrong. See our Defiance of the Fall reading order for all 17.

Mark of the Fool (J.M. Clarke)

Ten books, and finished. The author announced book 10's ebook (July 30, 2025) and audiobook (March 18, 2026) as the final ones; the audio post calls it "the final audiobook for MARK OF THE FOOL". Travis Baldree reads all ten, 206 hours 55 minutes. A light novel of part of book 1 (May 2025) and a webtoon (April 2026) exist, but neither is needed for the main story.

Every Audible edition sits between 4.67 and 4.89 stars. The full list is in our Mark of the Fool reading order.

Mother of Learning (nobody103)

Four arcs, finished: Royal Road marks the story COMPLETED with 109 chapters. The Kindle edition of Arc 1 came out December 1, 2021 and Arc 4 on April 4, 2023. Jack Voraces narrates all four audiobooks for Podium Audio, 97 hours 30 minutes in total. The author keeps the full text free on Royal Road and Fictionpress.

The order is simply Arc 1 to Arc 4. Lengths and ratings per arc are in our Mother of Learning audiobook guide.

Beware of Chicken (Casualfarmer)

Five books, from May 24, 2022 to Beware of Chicken 5 on December 2, 2025. Travis Baldree narrates all five, 78 hours 44 minutes, the shortest audio total in this guide. Book 6 is announced: Podium lists December 8, 2026, while Goodreads and Bookshop.org list a paperback for June 22, 2027.

Goodreads also has a Kindle listing for December 8, 2026, which suggests the later date is the paperback, but Amazon and Audible had no page for book 6 when we checked. Our Beware of Chicken reading order tracks both.

The Wandering Inn (pirateaba)

The longest series here. Audible lists 20 books: 19 out, and book 20, Memory's Flame, on pre-order for November 3, 2026. Books 1 to 19 run 776 hours 4 minutes, about 41 hours per book. Andrea Parsneau narrates books 1 to 15 and Erin Bennett from book 16.

This is the one series where the order needs a note. The web serial is split into volumes that do not match the book numbers, and the new ebook and paperback editions split books 1 and 2 into two parts each (the paperback of Fae and Fare is due October 20, 2026). The audiobooks are not split. Our Wandering Inn reading order maps volumes to books.

Mage Tank (Cornman)

Five books, from March 4, 2025 to Mage Tank 5 on July 22, 2026, with the ebooks 92 to 175 days apart. Amazon has Mage Tank 6 on Kindle pre-order as "Book 6 of 6" for March 17, 2027, and the author is posting book 6 chapters on Royal Road. Daniel Wisniewski narrates all five, 106 hours 21 minutes.

Aethon's own blurb pitches it to fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl. Dates and ratings are in our Mage Tank reading order.

GODEEPER: Dungeon Crawler Carl's audio has guest voices and a full-cast edition, which makes it the most complicated audiobook order here. Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobook guide →

Finished or Ongoing: Which Series Can You Binge?

Three of the ten have an ending you can reach today: Cradle, Mark of the Fool and Mother of Learning. Together they are 26 audiobooks and 438 hours 50 minutes. If you want to start something and finish it without waiting, pick from these three.

  • Cradle: 12 volumes, complete, plus the Threshold collection. Short books.
  • Mark of the Fool: 10 books, the author's "final" ebook and audiobook already out.
  • Mother of Learning: 4 arcs, COMPLETED on Royal Road, free to read there.

The other seven are open-ended. For most of them that is a feature, not a flaw: a reader who catches up gets new chapters every week on Royal Road or a new book every few months. It does mean the counts in this guide will change. The ones most likely to change first are The Wandering Inn (book 20 audio on November 3, 2026), The Primal Hunter (book 17 ebook on November 18, 2026) and Beware of Chicken (book 6 on December 8, 2026, per Podium).

Longest to Shortest on Audio

Ranked by total Audible length for the books out on October 10, 2026, with the average per audiobook rounded to the hour:

  1. The Wandering Inn: 776 h 4 m for 19 books, about 41 h each.
  2. Defiance of the Fall: 397 h 59 m for 17, about 23 h each.
  3. The Primal Hunter: 298 h 14 m for 15, about 20 h each.
  4. He Who Fights with Monsters: 292 h 8 m for 13, about 22 h each.
  5. Mark of the Fool: 206 h 55 m for 10, about 21 h each.
  6. Dungeon Crawler Carl: 159 h 22 m for 8, about 20 h each.
  7. Cradle: 134 h 25 m for 12, about 11 h each.
  8. Mage Tank: 106 h 21 m for 5, about 21 h each.
  9. Mother of Learning: 97 h 30 m for 4, about 24 h each.
  10. Beware of Chicken: 78 h 44 m for 5, about 16 h each.

At two hours of listening a day, Beware of Chicken takes about 39 days and The Wandering Inn about 388.

Analysis: what the numbers say

The order is rarely the problem. All ten series number their books, and none of our ten guides places a side book between two numbered books. Extras such as The Wandering Inn's Singer of Terandria spin-off or Mark of the Fool's light novel and webtoon sit outside the main run. The confusion comes from edition dates (Dungeon Crawler Carl's Ace reprints), new formats (He Who Fights with Monsters' subtitled hardcovers, The Wandering Inn's split ebooks) and collections that come after the main run (Cradle's Threshold).

The Wandering Inn is an outlier. Its 776 hours are 30% of the 2,547 hours in this guide, from one series out of ten. Its average book, about 41 hours, is two-thirds longer than the next-longest average here (Mother of Learning, about 24 hours).

Audio timing differs by series. He Who Fights with Monsters has had same-day audio for all 13 books, and most of Defiance of the Fall's 17 came out with the ebook. The Primal Hunter and Mark of the Fool started the same way, but their most recent audiobooks came 147 days (The Primal Hunter 15) and 231 days (Mark of the Fool 10) after the ebook. If you only listen, check the Audible date, not the ebook date, before you plan around a new release.

One narrator covers four of the ten. Travis Baldree reads Cradle, The Primal Hunter, Mark of the Fool and Beware of Chicken. A reader who had just caught up on The Primal Hunter wrote in an April 2026 r/litrpg thread: "Nothing will beat Travis Baldree for me." (u/NavyNUCa, comment, April 29, 2026).

Our take

Based on the facts above, the best first pick depends on one choice: do you want an ending? If yes, Cradle is the easiest start (short books, finished, one narrator), with Mark of the Fool as the longer finished option and Mother of Learning as the free-to-read one. If you want a long run that keeps going, Defiance of the Fall and He Who Fights with Monsters are the two where the audio has kept pace with the ebooks. The Primal Hunter is the one to start knowing the audio is months behind. The Wandering Inn is a commitment of its own: about 30% of all the listening hours in this guide. We will update the counts here when the dated releases above arrive.

How we checked this

This page is built from the source tables of our ten series guides. For each series, on October 10, 2026, we opened the publisher's product pages (Aethon, Podium, Penguin Random House, Hidden Gnome Publishing via Amazon), Amazon's Kindle or print pages, each book's Audible page (narrator, length, date), the Audible series page (book count), the author's site or announcement posts, and the Royal Road fiction page where the story is posted. Totals, averages and day counts are our own arithmetic from Audible's lengths. The Reddit quotes were copied from thread data saved that day. A site-agent then compared every number on this page with the source table before publication.
