The Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order is simple: eight main books, read by number, from Dungeon Crawler Carl (first published September 21, 2020) to A Parade of Horribles (May 12, 2026). Below is every book with its print edition date and page count from Penguin Random House, the Audible narrator and length, and the Goodreads rating as of October 10, 2026. No plot spoilers.

TL;DR: Read the eight books in number order, starting with book 1. Penguin Random House lists the series as eight books ("Book 8 of 8"). The Audible versions, narrated by Jeff Hays, add up to about 159 hours. No release date for book 9 was posted on Matt Dinniman's news page as of October 10, 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Eight books, read in number order. Penguin Random House's page for A Parade of Horribles says "Book 8 of 8".
  • Book 1 came out in 2020. Matt Dinniman's site gives September 21, 2020; the current Ace paperback on Penguin Random House is dated December 30, 2025.
  • Audiobooks: Jeff Hays narrates all eight on Audible; together they run about 159 hours 22 minutes (our sum).
  • Goodreads (checked Oct 10, 2026): every book averages 4.37 or higher; book 1 has 668k ratings.
  • What's next: no book 9 date on the author's news page; the same page confirms a TV show, with Jeff Hays voicing Princess Donut.

Overview

Dungeon Crawler Carl is Matt Dinniman's LitRPG series. It started as a web serial (the author's Royal Road page says "the first several chapters of DCC are now off of Royal Road because the book is on Amazon") and is now published in print by Ace, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Penguin Random House pitches book 1 with the line "The apocalypse will be televised!"

Two things make the order question trickier than it looks. First, the books have several editions with different dates: the original 2020 release, the Audible audiobook and the newer Penguin Random House print editions. Second, the Audible versions are not straight readings; the series page credits extra voice actors on some books. The table below keeps those apart and says which edition each date belongs to.

Every Dungeon Crawler Carl Book in Order

Dates in the "PRH edition" column are the edition Penguin Random House shows for each title on October 10, 2026 (a paperback for books 1 and 2, the hardcover for the rest). The Audible column gives the audiobook's own release date, which for the early books came years before the Ace print run.

The page counts are for those editions and add up to 5,168 pages. Book 4 also has a large-print paperback (August 26, 2025, 848 pages), so page counts depend on the edition you hold.

Step-by-Step: How to Read the Series

1. Start with Dungeon Crawler Carl (book 1): the series is numbered from it. The current Ace paperback runs 480 pages; the Audible version is 13 hours 31 minutes.

2. Read books 2 to 4 back to back: Carl's Doomsday Scenario, The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook and The Gate of the Feral Gods are the shortest stretch of the series on audio, between 11 and 18 hours each.

3. Plan more time for books 5 to 7: The Butcher's Masquerade, The Eye of the Bedlam Bride and This Inevitable Ruin are the longest, from 720 to 880 pages in the hardcovers and from 23.5 to nearly 29 hours on Audible.

4. Finish with A Parade of Horribles (book 8): published May 12, 2026 in hardcover and on Audible the same day. It is the newest book as of October 10, 2026.

5. Decide on one format per book, not per series: the Audible versions add voices and extras, so switching formats mid-book can be jarring. Switching between books is easy, because each book is a complete volume.

The Audiobooks: Narrators and Length

Jeff Hays narrates every book on Audible, and Audible's series page credits a few guest voices: The Critical Drinker on book 3; Patrick Warburton, Travis Baldree and Annie Ellicott on book 6; and Travis Baldree on book 7. The audio publisher on book 1 is Soundbooth Theater ("©2020 Matt Dinniman (P)2021 Soundbooth Theater").

The eight lengths add up to 159 hours 22 minutes. That is about 20 hours per book on average, but the spread is wide: book 2 is under 11.5 hours, book 7 is almost 29.

Readers in r/DungeonCrawlerCarl argue about format all the time. In a September 23, 2026 thread asking whether the audiobook is "really that much better than reading", the top comment, from u/asvalken with 1,165 points, said: "I prefer reading, but it's the best audiobook I've ever listened to." (comment). Another, from u/the_lighter_side_ (92 points), set expectations for the first book: "The narrator Jeff Hays is finding the voices in the first audio book, and it gets a lot smoother going forward" (comment).

Tips Before You Start

  • Pick your edition on purpose. The Audible versions of books 1 to 6 came out years before the current Penguin Random House print editions. If you want the extra voices, start with the audiobook.
  • Check the book number, not the cover. The audiobook covers on Audible differ from the print covers pictured here, so go by the number.
  • Book 4 in large print is a separate 848-page paperback (August 26, 2025).
  • There is also a graphic novel. Goodreads lists a Dungeon Crawler Carl graphic novel adaptation published in 2026 (adapted by Tevagah, art by Laurel Pursuit Studios). It retells book 1, so it is optional, not part of the reading order.
  • Avoid spoilers in fan wikis and Reddit threads past your current book; both use book numbers in thread titles.

What Comes After Book 8

As of October 10, 2026, the posts on the first page of the news page of Matt Dinniman's site are about merchandise and events, and none gives a release date for book 9. We will add the date here once the author or Penguin Random House posts it.

The same news page confirms the TV adaptation is moving: a July 27, 2026 post is headed "Jeff Hays confirms role for DCC TV show as Princess Donut". Until book 9 has a date, the books most often recommended to finished readers are in our books like Dungeon Crawler Carl list.

Our take

Based on the facts above, the order is not the hard part; the time is. Eight books and roughly 159 hours of audio is a long commitment, and books 5 to 7 are the longest. If you are unsure, start book 1 in whichever format you will actually finish: readers in the threads we quoted love the audio, but plenty of them read the print books first. Goodreads averages climb after book 3 and stay at 4.60 or higher for books 5 to 8, which matches the common advice to give the series at least a few books.

How we checked this

On October 10, 2026 we opened the Penguin Random House page for each book (edition date, page count, "Book N of 8"), Audible's Dungeon Crawler Carl series page (narrators, lengths, audio release dates), a Goodreads search listing for all eight books, the author's site (book 1 date, news page) and the series' Royal Road page. The Reddit quotes were copied from the thread data. The audio total and page total are our own sums. A second pass compared every number with our source table.
