LitRPG Glossary

Plain-English definitions for LitRPG and progression fantasy terms, from systems and stubs to cultivation and same-day audio. Each one comes with an example from a series we cover, so you can see the term in the wild.

28 terms·14 with guides·5 categories
A
ArcPlatforms & formats

A large section of a serialized story, usually ending on a turning point. Some series sell each arc as a book instead of numbering volumes.

Mother of Learning is published as four arcs, each one a book and an audiobook.

In our data: Mother of Learning

Audio gapPublishing

The wait between a book's first ebook and its audiobook, from zero days to many months depending on the publisher and the narrator's schedule. A gap is history, not a promise for the next book.

Defiance of the Fall's audiobooks came out with the ebook, while Mark of the Fool's last five came months later.

In our data: Defiance of the Fall, Mark of the Fool, Ebook to audiobook gap

B
Box set (omnibus)Platforms & formats

Several books of a series sold as one ebook or audiobook. Handy for a cheaper start, but it repeats books you may already own.

Audible sells Chrysalis, Books 1-3 as one title (54h41m), and The Path of Ascension has a Books 1-3.5 box set.

C
ClassSystems & progression

The role a character takes in a LitRPG system (healer, summoner, mage, tank), which decides which skills they can learn. Odd or mixed classes are a common hook.

Some titles name the class outright: Azarinth Healer, Nightmare Realm Summoner and Mage Tank.

In our data: Mage Tank

Cozy LitRPGSubgenres

LitRPG or progression fantasy with low stakes, where daily life, farming, cooking, crafting or a small community matter more than battles. The power still grows; it just is not the point.

Podium sells Beware of Chicken book 1 as a slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy, and Heretical Fishing follows a summoned hero who would rather go fishing.

In our data: Beware of Chicken

CultivationSubgenres

Fantasy where people grow stronger by refining an inner energy (often called qi) through meditation, techniques and breakthroughs, climbing named stages. It comes from Chinese xianxia and wuxia stories; "Western cultivation" means the same style written in English by Western authors.

Beware of Chicken is Casualfarmer's cultivation series, and Defiance of the Fall mixes cultivation with a LitRPG system.

In our data: Beware of Chicken, Defiance of the Fall

D
Dungeon coreSubgenres

Stories told from the dungeon's side: the main character is the dungeon, or the crystal at its heart, and spends the book designing rooms, traps and monsters while adventurers come in to loot it.

Dungeon Life by Khenal follows a man who dies and comes back as a dungeon.

F
Full-cast audiobookPublishing

An audiobook performed by several voice actors, sometimes with music and sound effects, instead of one narrator reading every part.

Soundbooth Theater's Everybody Loves Large Chests has Jeff Hays reading every volume with a cast that grows to nine named narrators by volume 9; some Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks add guest voices.

In our data: Dungeon Crawler Carl, Narrators

G
GameLitSubgenres

The wider family LitRPG belongs to: stories shaped by games (a game world, quests, a dungeon run) where the numbers can be light or missing. Stores and publishers often file GameLit and LitRPG on the same shelf.

Soundbooth Theater files Everybody Loves Large Chests under "Fantasy, GameLit, Humor, LitRPG", and Podium labels its LitRPG audiobooks "LitRPG & Gamelit".

I
IsekaiSubgenres

A story where the hero leaves our world for another one, by dying, being summoned or falling through a portal. The word is Japanese for "another world". Many LitRPG series open this way, and some readers just say "portal fantasy".

In Bog Standard Isekai, Mark is reborn as a child in a burned-out village; in Beneath the Dragoneye Moons, Elaine "is ripped from this world to Pallos".

L
LitRPGSubgenres

Fiction where game rules are part of the world: characters have levels, stats, classes and skills, and the book shows them, often as text boxes the characters can read. The name blends "literary" and "RPG" (role-playing game).

Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Primal Hunter and Defiance of the Fall are all LitRPG series in our guides.

In our data: Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Primal Hunter, Defiance of the Fall, Series by trope

M
Magic schoolTropes

A story set at an academy where the hero studies magic, sits exams and competes with classmates, with the school year giving the plot its shape.

Our guides tag Mark of the Fool, Mage Errant, Arcane Ascension and Mother of Learning as magic school stories.

In our data: Mark of the Fool, Mother of Learning

Monster MCTropes

A main character who is reborn as a monster instead of a person and has to survive, eat and evolve up the food chain. The fun is in seeing the world from the monster side.

Chrysalis by RinoZ follows a hero reborn as an ant monster.

N
NarratorPublishing

The voice actor who reads an audiobook. In LitRPG one narrator often reads a whole series, and many listeners follow a narrator from series to series.

Travis Baldree reads Cradle, The Primal Hunter, Mark of the Fool, Beware of Chicken, Unbound and The Ripple System.

In our data: Cradle, The Primal Hunter, Mark of the Fool, Narrators

P
Pre-orderPlatforms & formats

A store listing that takes orders before a book is out. The date on it is a plan, not a promise: publishers move dates, and two stores can show different ones.

Aethon's page for Defiance of the Fall 17 still showed a pre-order dated December 2, 2026 while Amazon's Kindle page gave September 16, 2026, the day it came out.

In our data: Defiance of the Fall, Release calendar

Progression fantasySubgenres

Fantasy built around a character getting stronger in clear, earned steps: training, breakthroughs, new ranks. The power climb drives the plot. It does not need a game interface, which is the main line between it and LitRPG.

Cradle and Mark of the Fool are tagged progression fantasy but not LitRPG in our guides; Defiance of the Fall carries both tags.

In our data: Cradle, Mark of the Fool, Defiance of the Fall, Series by trope

R
RegressorTropes

A hero who dies or fails and wakes up earlier in their own life with their memories, then uses what they know to do it better the second time. Close to a time loop, except it usually happens once.

Aethon describes RE: Birth (ebook and audiobook October 20, 2026) as "A LitRPG Regressor series that gives a dying old mage the chance to go back and prevent the end of the world."

In our data: Release calendar

ReissuePublishing

A new edition of a book that is already out, often when a bigger publisher picks up a self-published series. Store pages then show the new date, which can be years after the first one.

Matt Dinniman's site dates Dungeon Crawler Carl to September 21, 2020 and its republication to August 27, 2024; Harper Voyager relaunched Noobtown in 2026.

In our data: Dungeon Crawler Carl, Hardcovers

Royal RoadPlatforms & formats

The largest free site for English web serials. Many LitRPG and progression fantasy series start there chapter by chapter before an author or publisher sells edited ebooks and audiobooks.

Beware of Chicken was first posted on Royal Road in June 2021, and Mother of Learning's full text is still free there.

In our data: Beware of Chicken, Mother of Learning, Royal Road to print

S
Same-day audioPublishing

When the ebook and the audiobook come out on the same day. Some publishers do it for every book; others record the audiobook once the ebook is out.

Every Unbound audiobook came out the same day as the ebook, and Defiance of the Fall's usually do.

In our data: Defiance of the Fall, Ebook to audiobook gap

Side storyPublishing

A shorter book set in a series outside its main numbering (a novella, a collection, a prequel), usually read between two main books or after the end.

The Path of Ascension 10.5 is an audiobook novella to listen to between books 10 and 11, and Threshold collects stories from Cradle.

In our data: Cradle

StubPlatforms & formats

A web serial whose chapters were mostly taken down after the story came out as books, leaving only the first part (or a notice) free. Royal Road labels these pages STUB.

When we checked on October 10, 2026, Azarinth Healer's Royal Road page said "This fiction is a stub" and listed 24 chapters. Of the 17 Royal Road pages our editors read that week, 14 were stubs.

In our data: Royal Road to print

System apocalypseSubgenres

A LitRPG setup where a game-like system arrives on Earth without warning: monsters appear, people get levels and classes, and the first part of the story is about surviving the change.

Aethon calls Nightmare Realm Summoner "this action-packed LitRPG Apocalypse series" on its book 4 page.

T
The SystemSystems & progression

The game-like force in a LitRPG world that hands out levels, stats, skills and quests, usually speaking to characters through text boxes. Some series treat it as plain rules; in others it has a personality or an agenda.

Every series tagged LitRPG in our guides has one, from Dungeon Crawler Carl to Unbound.

In our data: Dungeon Crawler Carl

Time loopTropes

The hero relives the same stretch of time again and again, keeping their memories each round, and uses the repeats to learn, plan or find a way out.

Mother of Learning is a time-loop progression fantasy, and The Perfect Run is a superhero time-loop trilogy.

In our data: Mother of Learning

TutorialSystems & progression

An opening stage where the system teaches new arrivals its rules, often with starter quests and a deadline, before the real world or dungeon opens up. Many system apocalypse stories spend their first book here.

Hell Difficulty Tutorial traps a bus commuter, 23 fellow passengers and a corgi in a "Hell Difficulty" tutorial.

V
VRMMOSubgenres

Short for virtual-reality massively multiplayer online game. In a VRMMO LitRPG the characters log into a game world (sometimes for good) instead of having a game system land on their own world.

The Ripple System is set in the game Earthblood Online, and The Completionist Chronicles follows Joe, who joins a fantasy game world for good.

W
Web serialPlatforms & formats

A story published online in installments, often several chapters a week, before or alongside books. The serial is usually ahead of the books, and the books are edited versions of it.

The Wandering Inn is published chapter by chapter as a web serial on wanderinginn.com and collected into books.

In our data: The Wandering Inn
