Dungeon core books flip the usual LitRPG setup: the hero is the dungeon, not the adventurer going through it. We counted which dungeon core series readers name in 4,433 Reddit comments from 43 recommendation threads, kept only series whose official blurb says the main character is (or serves) a dungeon core, and then pulled each book 1 from Audible. Seven series made the cut. Here they are with narrators, lengths and series counts as of October 11, 2026.

TL;DR: The Divine Dungeon (16 comments) and Dungeon Life (10) are far ahead of everything else. Jonathan Brooks writes three of the seven: The Crafter's Dungeon, The Dungeon Fairy and Station Core. For a short commitment, Cat Core and Dinosaur Dungeon have three books each on Audible.

Key Takeaways

  • Two clear leaders: The Divine Dungeon (16 comments) and Dungeon Life (10) account for 26 of the 37 series mentions we counted.
  • One author, three series: Jonathan Brooks wrote The Crafter's Dungeon, The Dungeon Fairy and Station Core, each with a "Dungeon Core" subtitle on Audible.
  • Short first books: six of the seven book 1 audiobooks run under 15 hours; Dinosaur Dungeon's is the longest at 18 hours 37 minutes.
  • Familiar voices: Andrea Parsneau reads Cat Core; Jeff Hays and Annie Ellicott read Dinosaur Dungeon.
  • Names can mislead: Dungeon Crawler Carl, Rogue Dungeon and Dungeon Lord all have "dungeon" in the title, but their blurbs do not make the hero a dungeon core.

Overview: how we picked the dungeon core books

There is no publisher shelf for dungeon core, so we used two tests. First, the series had to come up in our saved Reddit data: 4,433 comments from 43 threads, mostly "what should I read next" and audiobook requests (24 in r/litrpg, 15 in r/ProgressionFantasy and four in series subreddits), saved on October 10, 2026. Second, the official blurb on Audible had to say the main character is a dungeon core or is bound to one. A comment counted once per series it named; comments that warned readers off a series were counted separately, and we excluded recommendations posted by a series' own author or narrator.

That left 33 comments in 14 threads, naming the seven series below 37 times. These are small numbers outside the top two, so read the bottom of the list as leads rather than a firm ranking.

The Seven Dungeon Core Series

1. The Divine Dungeon (Dakota Krout)

The series readers reach for first, named in 16 comments across 10 threads. Audible's blurb for book 1, Dungeon Born, sets up the premise in one line: "He is a Dungeon Core, a soul forced against his will into a magical stone." One reader in a February 2026 r/litrpg thread pointed to Dakota Krout for "a series from the perspective of a sentient dungeon (Divine Dungeon)" (u/shadowkyros, comment, February 4, 2026).

Book 1 is 12 hours 32 minutes, read by Vikas Adam for Tantor Audio, with 16,984 ratings, by far the most on this list. Audible's series page has 10 titles because it includes dramatized adaptations from Graphic Audio; Dungeon Born (Dramatized Adaptation) runs 8 hours 38 minutes with 11 voices. One reader liked that version best: "Divine dungeon, especially the dramatized audiobook is amazing!!!" (u/Desert-Lander, June 21, 2025). Not everyone agrees: "avoid Divine Dungeon, I just finished it and god it was so hard to listen to." (u/myworkaccount1129, January 23, 2026), the only warning we found for any of the seven ranked series.

2. Dungeon Life (Khenal)

Audible's blurb: "a human becomes a dungeon", and soon more than that. Readers describe the setup the same way: "The mc is reborn as a dungeon core in an old house." (u/Myrkana, July 2, 2026). Another called it "a slice of life, dungeon core book" (u/ConsistentMachine946), which is why it also appears in our cozy LitRPG books list.

Book 1 is 14 hours 55 minutes, narrated by Michael Gallagher for Podium Audio, released February 6, 2024. Audible's series page lists five books; the fifth had a pre-order date of December 8, 2026 when we checked. A March 2026 r/litrpg comment summed up the appeal: "Four audiobooks so far and a fifth coming in December, so much fun and the progression of the story and characters seem actually earned." (u/LiriStorm, comment, March 19, 2026).

3. The Crafter's Dungeon (Jonathan Brooks)

Audible titles book 1 The Crafter's Dungeon: A Dungeon Core Novel. Its blurb: "Reborn in the shape of a tiny Dungeon Core, Sandra learned about the purpose behind dungeons and Cores from an assigned dungeon helper", and it promises "a heavy crafting emphasis." u/QuarkQuake added it to a recommendation in February 2026: "Also, a series called crafters dungeon is really good".

Book 1 is 9 hours 59 minutes, read by Louise Cooksey and published by the author. The Audible series page (Dungeon Crafting Series) lists eight titles, including a books 1 to 3 set.

4. Dinosaur Dungeon (Alex Raizman)

The premise is in the blurb: "Newborn Dungeon Cores must choose what entity they help contain, and that choice determines what monsters they are able to summon." Here the monsters are dinosaurs. u/Numbar43 wrote that the core is "The only dungeon core on the planet that can make dinosaurs as it's monsters." (comment, June 20, 2025).

Book 1, Wrath, is the longest first book here at 18 hours 37 minutes. Annie Ellicott and Jeff Hays read it. A July 2026 reader pointed that out for Dungeon Crawler Carl fans: "it also has Jeff Hayes as the Secondary Narrator" (u/Whitecoatking). Jeff Hays is the voice of Dungeon Crawler Carl (see our Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobook guide). Audible lists three books: Wrath, Pride and Greed.

5. Cat Core (Dean Henegar)

Audible's blurb: "a voice in her head keeps telling her that she’s become a dungeon core, whatever that is". One reader called it "crazy cat lady meets dungeon core"; another said "book 1 is on Audible Plus and was fun" (u/Aaron_P9, July 2025).

Book 1 is 11 hours 14 minutes, read by Andrea Parsneau for Podium Audio. She also reads every audiobook in our Azarinth Healer reading order. Audible lists three books: Cat Core, Lich's Bargain and Road Trip, the last dated November 8, 2022.

6. The Dungeon Fairy (Jonathan Brooks)

The one entry where the hero is not the core itself: the blurb says what Tacca "ever wanted to be since she was very little was a fairy assistant to a Dungeon Core." Audible subtitles book 1 A Dungeon Core Escapade. One reader put it on a list of "Shorter finished ones I can recommend" in February 2025, as Hapless Dungeon Fairy.

Book 1 is 9 hours 24 minutes, read by Miles Meili. Audible's series page (The Hapless Dungeon Fairy) lists five titles, one of them a box set of books 1 to 4.

7. Station Core (Jonathan Brooks)

Book 1 is The Station Core: A Dungeon Core Epic, and the blurb asks "who wouldn’t want their consciousness trapped in a Station Core". u/QuarkQuake recommended the series in February 2026 and added: "It's several different takes on the dungeon core concept." (comment, February 25, 2026).

Book 1 is 9 hours 38 minutes, read by Miles Meili. The Audible series page (Station Cores) lists six titles, including a complete compilation.

Analysis: what the dungeon core list shows

The trope has a home author. Three of the seven series are Jonathan Brooks's, each with "Dungeon Core" in its Audible subtitle (Novel, Escapade, Epic). If you like one, the other two are the obvious next listen.

First books are short. Six of the seven book 1 audiobooks run under 15 hours, and three are under 10. Compare our best LitRPG audiobooks list, where seven of the 12 first books run past 20 hours.

"Dungeon" in the title is not enough. Readers named Hugo Huesca's Dungeon Lord in 22 comments, more than any series above, but Audible's blurb only has Edward swept into Ivalis "as a Dungeon Lord, the Dark's most powerful servant", with no word on building a dungeon, so we left it out. In Rogue Dungeon (6 comments) the hero is stranded in "an ultra-immersive fantasy video game" where "he's taken the form of a low-level troll". And Dungeon Crawler Carl is about crawling a dungeon, not being one; see our books like Dungeon Crawler Carl for that side of the genre.

Most series here are not new. Six of the seven book 1 audiobooks came out between 2017 and 2021. Dungeon Life (February 2024) is the recent one, and its fifth book had an Audible pre-order date of December 8, 2026 when we checked.

Our take

Based on the tally and the Audible data above, start with The Divine Dungeon if you want the most-recommended dungeon core series and a large audience behind it (16,984 Audible ratings for book 1), or with Dungeon Life if you want something newer, cozier and still going, with book 5 on pre-order for December 8, 2026 as of October 11. Cat Core and Dinosaur Dungeon are the short options at three books each, and Dinosaur Dungeon is the pick if you want Jeff Hays's voice outside Dungeon Crawler Carl. Beyond the top two, our counts are 2 or 3 comments per series, so treat those places as leads, not a verdict.

How we checked this

On October 10, 2026 we searched 4,433 comments from 43 Reddit recommendation threads, saved that day, for every series name that came up next to dungeon core talk, and read each hit (Reddit itself was blocked for live reading, so counts and quotes come from that saved data). For every candidate we opened the Audible book 1 page and read the publisher's summary; series whose blurb did not make the hero a dungeon core, or bind them to one, were dropped. On October 10 and 11 we read each book 1's narrator, length, date, publisher and rating from Audible, and each Audible series page for the title count. Dungeon Life's book 5 date and Cat Core's book 3 date come from our cozy LitRPG source table, checked October 10. A site-agent then compared every number and quote with our source table before publication.
