Time loop LitRPG books, and their regression cousins, give the hero a second chance: either the same days repeat until he gets them right, or he wakes up in the past with memories of a future that failed. We counted which of these series readers name in 4,433 Reddit comments from 43 recommendation threads, checked each book 1 blurb on Audible (or Royal Road) for the loop or the return, and pulled narrators, lengths and book counts. Seven series stand out. Here they are as of October 11, 2026.

TL;DR: The Perfect Run (93 comments) and Mother of Learning (74) are far ahead of everything else. For a LitRPG with real stats, The Stubborn Skill-Grinder in a Time Loop (19) is the most-named. If you want a one-time return instead of a loop, try Reborn: Apocalypse or Apocalypse Redux (13 each). Towers of Heaven is the quickest start, at 7 hours 37 minutes.

Key Takeaways

  • Two clear leaders: The Perfect Run (93 comments in 30 threads) and Mother of Learning (74 in 32 threads).
  • Loops and returns are different: four of the seven repeat the same stretch of time; Reborn: Apocalypse, Apocalypse Redux and Towers of Heaven send the hero back once.
  • First books vary a lot: from 7 hours 37 minutes (Towers of Heaven) to 24 hours 36 minutes (The Stubborn Skill-Grinder).
  • Some series are finished: Mother of Learning is marked COMPLETED on Royal Road, and readers describe The Perfect Run and Apocalypse Redux as complete.
  • Newest pick: The Years of Apocalypse book 1 came out on Audible on June 16, 2026.

Overview: how we picked the time loop LitRPG books

We searched 4,433 comments from 43 Reddit threads, mostly "what should I read next" and audiobook requests (24 in r/litrpg, 15 in r/ProgressionFantasy and four in series subreddits), saved on October 10, 2026, for the names of time loop and regression series. A comment counted once for each series it named. Comments that warned readers off a series were counted separately, so a series with many warnings does not get credit for them. Then we opened each book 1 page on Audible (Royal Road for Mother of Learning) and kept only series whose blurb has the hero looping or going back in time.

These counts measure how often readers bring a series up, not how much they liked it, and a long list that names five series counts for all five. Read the bottom of the list as leads rather than a firm ranking.

The Seven Series

1. The Perfect Run (Maxime J. Durand)

The series readers bring up most, in 93 comments across 30 threads. Audible's blurb gives the hook: Ryan "Quicksave" Romano "can create a save-point in time and redo his life whenever he dies", and in New Rome "he has to try them all. Only then will he achieve his perfect ending...no matter how many loops it takes." It is a superhero story more than a stats-and-levels LitRPG, but readers recommend it in the same breath.

One reader summed up the appeal: "Perfect run. 3 books. Great story, great characters growth and fun powers. Finished trilogy with a satisfying ending." (u/hunter11534, comment, February 26, 2026). Another pitched it to a Mother of Learning fan: "It's a very interesting time loop story which albeit lacks a tad in the size of the world building, does pretty well for how short it is." (u/Substantial-Video178, July 2, 2026). Three comments went the other way; one reader "really enjoyed The Perfect Run series, until the last 5 minutes when a weird comment by the protagonist just ruined him for me." (u/d0ctorj1mmy, October 25, 2025).

Book 1 is 17 hours 58 minutes, read by Eric Michael Summerer for Podium Audio, released November 2, 2021. Audible lists three books.

2. Mother of Learning (nobody103)

The other big name here, and the story is free to read. Royal Road describes Zorian as "Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit", and the description plays on the title: "Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again". Royal Road tags it Time Loop, Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery and Magic; there is no game System, but readers recommend it in the same threads as the LitRPG picks.

It also has the most warnings in our tally (9). One reader "didn't like MOL either (I fid finish it though)" (u/Drragg, May 16, 2026); another, after naming other series as the best at a "relatable well written party of characters", wrote: "For what you’d like, I’d strongly recommend against mother of learning." and called it "a solid series, but the only consistent character is the main character for like a book and a half" (u/Zegram_Ghart, comment, July 15, 2025).

The story is complete and free on Royal Road. The audiobook is four arcs read by Jack Voraces for Podium Audio, 97 hours 30 minutes in total; lengths, dates and ratings per arc are in our Mother of Learning audiobook guide.

3. The Stubborn Skill-Grinder in a Time Loop (X-RHODEN-X)

The most-named loop story with real LitRPG stats. Audible pitches it as "perfect for fans of Mother of Learning, Primal Hunter, and The Perfect Run", and the blurb sets up the loop plainly: after a warrior's death, Orodan "wakes up again at the start of the Cataclysm. Then again. And again." Instead of scheming, he keeps "stubbornly trying the same thing over and over again via brute force till it's done."

Readers find the title does the selling: "honestly the title explains it pretty well" (u/Critical-Advantage11, October 7, 2025). One compared the heroes: "Stubborn skill grinder the main character is not as smart as perfect run." (u/darkhero5, July 27, 2025). Not everyone stayed; one reader called it "one of my saddest DNFs" (u/AbjectTerra, October 25, 2025).

Book 1 is the longest here at 24 hours 36 minutes, read by Daniel Wisniewski for Aethon Audio, released May 13, 2025. Audible lists six titles.

4. Reborn: Apocalypse (L. M. Kerr)

A regression story, not a loop. Humanity was "warped away to a new reality, the mystical Seven Layers" and failed to climb them; then "Micheal Care's memories have been transported back into his past self thanks to a magical Artifact he found by chance." The blurb opens with the question the whole subgenre asks: "If you could turn back the clock and fix all the mistakes you ever made, would you?"

Most of its 13 comments are short list entries. Book 1 is 15 hours 7 minutes, read by Adam Stubbs and published by the author (Logan Kerr), released October 28, 2019, with 3,054 ratings, the most on this list. Audible lists five titles.

5. Apocalypse Redux (Jakob H. Greif)

Isaac Thoma is "the last and most powerful human on a blighted Earth" when he is "Hurled back in time" with "one chance to change it all", including a chance "to stop the [System]". The blurb calls it "a pre-apocalyptic LitRPG". Readers stress that it is done: "I’m trying Apocalypse Redux now. 7 books, fully complete, returner with system." (u/MrBooniecap, comment, January 20, 2026).

Book 1 is 15 hours 48 minutes, read by Daniel Thomas May for Shadow Alley Press, released November 29, 2022. Audible lists seven titles.

6. Towers of Heaven (Cameron Milan)

"One day, six towers appear on Earth." By 2083 there are only a hundred survivors; the last one clears the final floor, is granted one wish, and "decides to go back in time to before the towers arrived." Most of its nine comments are bare list entries, so readers say little about it beyond the name.

It is the quickest start here: book 1 is 7 hours 37 minutes, read by Steve Campbell and published by the author, released June 4, 2019, with 4.63 stars from 2,127 ratings. Audible lists four titles, one of them a complete-series edition.

7. The Years of Apocalypse (Uranium Phoenix)

The newest series on the list. The blurb: "Thirty days to stop the apocalypse." Mirian Castrella, a senior student at a magical academy, "finds herself caught in a time loop", and Audible calls it a "time-loop progression fantasy". One August 2026 reader was emphatic: "It has absolutely top tier character growth for the main character in a time loop." (u/GuruGurrlicious, comment, August 24, 2026).

Book 1 is 22 hours 29 minutes, read by Jessica Threet for Aethon Audio, released June 16, 2026. It has only 185 ratings so far (4.7). Audible lists two books.

Analysis: what the time loop list shows

Two series carry the trope. The Perfect Run and Mother of Learning together have 167 of the comments we counted; the next series has 19. Neither is a strict stats-and-levels LitRPG, which is worth knowing if that is what you want.

Loop or return changes the feel. In the four loop stories the hero dies or fails and starts over, often many times. In the three return stories the hero gets one second chance, carrying knowledge of a future that already went wrong; Reborn: Apocalypse, Apocalypse Redux and Towers of Heaven all start from humanity's defeat.

Warnings cluster at the top. Mother of Learning has 9 warning comments and The Perfect Run 3, more than all the other series combined (2). Popular series get more pushback, so read the warnings as a check on fit, not a verdict.

Also named. Below the seven, readers named Restarting the Apocalypse and 100th Run (3 comments each), Apocalypse: Regression and The Menocht Loop (2 each), and Save Scumming and Returner's Defiance (1 each). One reader suggested Save Scumming to someone who rated The Perfect Run and Mother of Learning top tier: "Similar time loop hi jinks." (u/-JAW-, July 25, 2026).

Our take

Based on the tally and the Audible data above, start with The Perfect Run if you want the series readers bring up most, a three-book run that a reader called a "Finished trilogy with a satisfying ending". Pick Mother of Learning if you want the finished classic and do not need a game System, but read the warnings first: it has the most pushback in our data. For a true LitRPG loop with stats, The Stubborn Skill-Grinder in a Time Loop is the most-named, though its first book is the longest here. If you prefer one second chance over endless loops, Apocalypse Redux (seven books, "fully complete" per one reader) or the shorter Towers of Heaven are the picks. Below the top three, our counts are 7 to 13 comments, so treat those places as leads.

How we checked this

On October 10 and 11, 2026 we searched 4,433 comments from 43 Reddit recommendation threads, saved October 10, for the names of time loop and regression series and sorted each hit into a mention or a warning (Reddit itself was blocked for live reading, so counts and quotes come from that saved data). For each series we read the blurb on Audible's book 1 page (Royal Road for Mother of Learning) and kept only those with a loop or a return in time. Narrator, length, release date, publisher and rating come from each Audible book 1 page, and title counts from each Audible series page, checked October 11. Mother of Learning's audio figures come from our audiobook guide, checked October 10. A site-agent then compared every number and quote with our source table, including a recount of the tally, before publication.
