Books like Cradle are easy to name and hard to rank, so we counted. We read 11 r/ProgressionFantasy threads where readers asked what to read after Will Wight's 12-book series, 277 top-level comments in all, and tallied the series they named. Below are the 10 most named, each with its book 1 audiobook length and narrator from Audible and its Goodreads rating as of October 10, 2026. No plot spoilers beyond each book's official blurb.

TL;DR: The three most named were Mage Errant (24 comments), Mother of Learning (20) and Beware of Chicken (15). If you want a finished story, start with Mother of Learning or Mage Errant. If you want Travis Baldree's voice again, try Beware of Chicken, The Weirkey Chronicles or Mark of the Fool.

Key Takeaways

  • Most named: Mage Errant, in 24 comments and 10 of the 11 threads.
  • Finished picks: Mother of Learning is "COMPLETED" on Royal Road; Mage Errant has seven books on its author's site and readers call it finished.
  • Same narrator as Cradle: Travis Baldree reads book 1 of Beware of Chicken, The Weirkey Chronicles, Mark of the Fool and A Thousand Li.
  • Shortest start of the ten: Soulhome (The Weirkey Chronicles) is 8 hours 34 minutes on Audible; the longest book 1 here, Bastion, is 38 hours 23 minutes.
  • Brand new: Sky Pride's book 1 audiobook is listed on Audible for October 20, 2026.

Overview: how we picked these books like Cradle

Cradle is finished: Will Wight's site describes it as "12 volumes, complete", and on Audible Travis Baldree narrates all 12 (see our Cradle series reading order for every length). For some readers that is the point. As u/Fusispora put it in one of the threads: "The best part of the Cradle is that it ends. It is a feature we don't see in nowadays PF books." (comment, February 2, 2025).

On October 10, 2026 we pulled the full thread data for 11 r/ProgressionFantasy posts from February 2025 to September 2026 with titles such as "What to read after Cradle?", "Books similar to the Cradle series" and "Give me books similar to Cradle and are FINISHED". We counted each top-level comment that named a series once, by title or common short form (for example "MoL" for Mother of Learning). Then we opened the Audible page for each series' first book and its Goodreads search listing. We have not read these series ourselves; the ranking is the readers', the facts are the publishers'.

The 10 series, ranked by reader recommendations

1. Mage Errant by John Bierce

  • What it is: a coming-of-age magic school series. Audible's blurb for book 1, Into the Labyrinth, opens: "Hugh of Emblin is, so far as he's concerned, the worst student that the Academy at Skyhold has ever seen."
  • Why it made the list: 24 comments, the most in our tally, and named in 10 of the 11 threads.
  • Stat line: John Bierce's site lists seven Mage Errant books. On Audible, books 1 and 2 come together as Mage Errant: Publisher's Pack, narrated by Ralph Lister, 16 hours 18 minutes, Podium Audio, August 20, 2019. Goodreads, Into the Labyrinth: 4.18 from 13.6k ratings.
  • New edition: on September 29, 2026 the author announced the series is "relaunching in bookstores today through Aethon and Simon and Schuster", with Volume 1 containing the first two books.
  • Best for: readers who liked Cradle's training-and-school arcs and want a series with an end.
  • One caveat: there is no standalone book 1 on Audible; you start with the two-book pack.

u/DaSuHouse summed up why it keeps coming up: "Mage Errant is one of the few other finished series in the genre that's written by a professional author" (comment, February 2, 2025).

2. Mother of Learning by nobody103 (Domagoj Kurmaić)

  • What it is: a magic academy story. Audible's blurb begins: "Zorian Kazinski has all the time in the world to get stronger", and adds that "time is something he is about to get plenty of."
  • Why it made the list: 20 comments, in 9 of the 11 threads.
  • Stat line: Royal Road marks the web serial "COMPLETED" at 109 chapters. Audible lists 4 books (Arcs 1 to 4). Arc 1: narrated by Jack Voraces, 22 hours 55 minutes, Podium Audio, December 21, 2021. Goodreads, Arc 1: 4.46 from 18.3k ratings.
  • Best for: readers who want a single story that is already finished.
  • One caveat: the Royal Road page also points to the author's newer story, Zenith of Sorcery; that is a separate series, not more Mother of Learning.

3. Beware of Chicken by Casualfarmer

  • What it is: Audible calls book 1 "A laugh-out-loud, slice-of-life martial-arts fantasy about...farming????", a cultivation story that turns away from fighting.
  • Why it made the list: 15 comments.
  • Stat line: Audible lists 5 books. Book 1: narrated by Travis Baldree, 12 hours 35 minutes, Podium Audio, May 24, 2022. Goodreads book 1: 4.45 from 15.8k ratings. On Royal Road the serial is a stub; its latest entry is "v7 Epilogue: And The Paths Leading Back Home", posted August 3, 2026.
  • Best for: Cradle fans who want the same narrator and a much gentler tone.
  • One caveat: it is a comedy first; if you want Cradle's pace of fights, it is the wrong pick.

In a September 16, 2026 thread, u/ciyilabdf wrote: "Beware of Chicken is worth a look if you're okay with something more relaxed. It has progression, a great cast, and romance that actually develops naturally." (comment).

4. The Immortal Great Souls by Phil Tucker

  • What it is: book 1 is Bastion. Audible's blurb: "Reborn without memories, Scorio learns that he is a Great Soul, a legendary defender of the ancient city of Bastion."
  • Why it made the list: 14 comments that named the series by title.
  • Stat line: Audible lists 4 books. Bastion: narrated by Nick Podehl, 38 hours 23 minutes, Podium Audio, March 16, 2022. Goodreads: 4.37 from 7,572 ratings.
  • Best for: readers who want another academy story, this one set in the underworld (the blurb mentions "the underworld's greatest instructors").
  • One caveat: book 1 alone runs over four times as long as Unsouled on audio (38 h 23 m against 8 h 52 m).

5. The Weirkey Chronicles by Sarah Lin

  • What it is: book 1 is Soulhome, which Audible pitches as "Betrayed. Murdered. Reborn. One last chance, to make it right."
  • Why it made the list: 14 comments.
  • Stat line: Audible's series page lists 8 titles, one of them an omnibus. Soulhome: narrated by Travis Baldree, 8 hours 34 minutes, published by Sarah Lin, December 10, 2021. Goodreads: 3.99 from 3,484 ratings, the lowest average on this list.
  • Best for: readers who liked Cradle's short books; Soulhome is about as long as Unsouled on audio.
  • One caveat: apart from the brand-new Sky Pride, it has the fewest Goodreads ratings of the ten, so its average rests on a small sample.

6. The Path of Ascension by C. Mantis

  • What it is: a tier-based progression series. Audible's blurb: "Orphaned by Monsters. Matt must power up to save others from the same fate."
  • Why it made the list: 14 comments.
  • Stat line: Audible's series page lists 14 titles, including a box set. Book 1: narrated by J.S. Arquin, 24 hours 3 minutes, Aethon Audio, October 4, 2022. Goodreads book 1: 4.39 from 9,855 ratings. As of October 10, 2026 the Royal Road serial was still updating (chapter 525 went up October 9, 2026).
  • Best for: readers who want a long series built around climbing power tiers (the blurb's "empire-wide race to ascend the Tiers").
  • One caveat: it is still being written, and book 1 is far longer than Unsouled on audio (24 h 3 m against 8 h 52 m).

7. Mark of the Fool by J.M. Clarke

  • What it is: a wizard-academy series whose Audible blurb opens "The gods chose him. He said no."
  • Why it made the list: 14 comments.
  • Stat line: Audible lists 10 books. Book 1: narrated by Travis Baldree, 19 hours, Aethon Audio, September 20, 2022. Goodreads book 1: 4.28 from 11.7k ratings.
  • Best for: readers who want Travis Baldree and a university setting.
  • One caveat: Audible already lists 10 books, close to Cradle's 12, so it is a long commitment.

8. Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

  • What it is: a LitRPG comedy rather than a cultivation story.
  • Why it made the list: 14 comments, five of them in the "What to read after Cradle?" thread.
  • Stat line: eight books; Jeff Hays narrates every Audible edition. Full order and lengths: our Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order.
  • Best for: readers who want a funnier, faster series next.
  • One caveat: the tone is very different from Cradle's.

9. Sky Pride by Warby Picus

  • What it is: a cultivation web serial. Royal Road's blurb asks: "What does it take to climb out of the trash and into the sky?"
  • Why it made the list: 10 comments; several readers named it as a cultivation pick.
  • Stat line: Royal Road marks it "ONGOING" with 418 chapters and more than 26,000 followers. As of October 10, 2026 the page title says "Vol. 1 Stubbing October 17", and Audible lists book 1, The Feral Daoist, for October 20, 2026: narrated by J.S. Arquin, 14 hours 28 minutes, Shadow Alley Press.
  • Best for: readers who want to start a new cultivation series near its first book release.
  • One caveat: Goodreads had almost no ratings for the book edition when we checked, so there is no meaningful average yet.

10. He Who Fights with Monsters by Shirtaloon

  • What it is: a long LitRPG series; its blurb opens "Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters."
  • Why it made the list: 10 comments.
  • Stat line: 13 books, all narrated by Heath Miller. Book 1: 28 hours 56 minutes on Audible. Goodreads book 1: 4.33 from 53.9k ratings. Every book's length and date: our He Who Fights with Monsters reading order.
  • Best for: listeners who want a very long series with one narrator.
  • One caveat: readers split sharply over its main character.

Honorable mentions

  • A Thousand Li by Tao Wong: 9 comments. Book 1, The First Step, is narrated by Travis Baldree on Audible (8 hours 27 minutes); Goodreads 4.09 from 7,348 ratings. Audible's series page says "20 books in series". Its blurb: "Long Wu Ying never expected to join a Sect or become a real cultivator."
  • Will Wight's other series: 7 comments named The Elder Empire, The Traveler's Gate or The Last Horizon. His site lists The Elder Empire as "Complete, 6 books over 2 trilogies", The Traveler's Gate as "Completed" and The Last Horizon as "Currently ongoing".

Which one should you pick?

  • You want an ending: Mother of Learning (completed) or Mage Errant.
  • You want Travis Baldree again: Beware of Chicken, The Weirkey Chronicles, Mark of the Fool or A Thousand Li.
  • You liked the short books: The Weirkey Chronicles; Soulhome is 8 hours 34 minutes.
  • You want the school setting: Mage Errant, Mother of Learning, Mark of the Fool or The Immortal Great Souls.
  • You want something new: Sky Pride, with its first audiobook dated October 20, 2026.

Our take

Based on the tally and the facts above, Mother of Learning and Mage Errant are the safest next steps for a Cradle reader: they are the two most named, Mother of Learning is marked completed, and readers in these threads describe Mage Errant as finished. If what you miss is the narrator, Beware of Chicken is the easiest switch: same voice, a 12-hour first book and the highest Goodreads average of the Baldree-narrated picks (4.45). The Immortal Great Souls and The Path of Ascension suit readers who want more of Cradle's climb, with the caveat that their first books run 38 and 24 hours on audio, and The Path of Ascension is still updating on Royal Road.

How we checked this

On October 10, 2026 we read the thread data for 11 r/ProgressionFantasy posts asking for books like Cradle (277 top-level comments) and counted, once per comment, each series on our list of search terms; the terms and per-thread counts are in our source file. For each series we opened the Audible product page for book 1 (narrator, length, release date, publisher) and its Audible series page (number of titles), the Goodreads search listing for book 1, and, where the story started as a web serial, its Royal Road page (status, chapters). We also opened John Bierce's site and used Will Wight's site entries from our Cradle source table, checked the same day. We have not read these series; no reading experience here is ours. A site-agent then compared every number with our source table and re-opened the key pages; the lines it flagged were fixed before publication.
