Books like He Who Fights with Monsters are what HWFWM readers ask for once they catch up, and Reddit has plenty of those threads. We read 10 of them in r/litrpg, from January 2022 to August 2026, 640 top-level comments in all, and counted the series readers named. Below are the 12 most named, with each first book's Audible narrator, plus its length and rating where Audible lists them, as of October 10, 2026. No plot spoilers beyond each book's official blurb.

TL;DR: The Primal Hunter (75 comments) is the clear first pick, then Cradle (50), Defiance of the Fall (41) and Mark of the Fool (40). If you want a series as long as HWFWM, start with The Primal Hunter or Defiance of the Fall. If you want an ending, Cradle or Mother of Learning. Dungeon Crawler Carl is missing only because most posters had already named it in their own post.

Key Takeaways

  • Top pick: The Primal Hunter, 75 comments, 25 more than second-placed Cradle.
  • Widest spread: Noobtown was named in 9 of the 10 threads; Cradle, Mark of the Fool and Mother of Learning in 8.
  • Long series: Audible lists 17 Defiance of the Fall titles, 15 Primal Hunter and 14 Path of Ascension, against 13 for HWFWM.
  • Shorter first books: every first book here is shorter on audio than HWFWM book 1 (28 hours 56 minutes).
  • Not ranked: Dungeon Crawler Carl, named by the poster in 8 of the 10 threads.

Overview: how we picked these books like He Who Fights with Monsters

He Who Fights with Monsters is a long series: 13 books on Audible, all narrated by Heath Miller, with book 13 released October 6, 2026 (see our He Who Fights with Monsters reading order for every date). Readers who catch up tend to ask the same question in r/litrpg, so we used those threads instead of our own taste.

On October 10, 2026 we pulled the comment data for 10 threads posted between January 5, 2022 and August 24, 2026. Each one is a poster who had read HWFWM asking what to read next, with titles like "Books like He who fights with monsters", "What should I read after He Who Fights With Monsters?" and "What next after HWFWM and DCC????". We counted each top-level comment once per series it named. HWFWM itself was never counted, and a series named in a thread's title or opening post was not counted in that thread, since the poster had already brought it up.

That rule removes one big name. Dungeon Crawler Carl was in the title or opening post of 8 of the 10 threads, and in the other two it drew 3 comments, so it does not rank. Read it as a finding: most HWFWM readers asking for more already mentioned DCC in their own post. If you have not, our Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order is the place to start. The same rule kept System Universe out of one thread whose poster already owned its first book, System Change.

Then we opened the Audible page of each series' first book (narrator, length, rating where shown) and its Audible series page (number of titles). We have not read these series ourselves; the ranking is the readers', the facts are the publishers'.

The 12 books like He Who Fights with Monsters, ranked

1. The Primal Hunter by Zogarth

  • What it is: a system-apocalypse series. The blurb: "On just another average day, Jake finds himself in a forest filled with monsters, dangers, and opportunity."
  • Why it made the list: 75 comments in 6 threads, the most of any series.
  • Stat line: 15 titles on Audible, all narrated by Travis Baldree. Book 1: 20 hours 9 minutes, Aethon Audio, 4.61 from 13,750 ratings. Our Primal Hunter reading order has all 16 ebooks and the audio dates.
  • Best for: readers who want another very long series with one narrator.
  • One caveat: the audiobooks run one book behind the ebooks; book 16 was not on Audible yet when we checked.

u/Tasty_Commercial6527 put it simply: "People who like hwfwm usually enjoy primal hunter as well" (comment, January 23, 2026).

2. Cradle by Will Wight

  • What it is: a cultivation series. The blurb: "Lindon is Unsouled, forbidden to learn the sacred arts of his clan."
  • Why it made the list: 50 comments in 8 of the 10 threads.

  • Best for: readers who want an ending, and short books.
  • One caveat: it is finished, so there is no more Cradle to wait for; Will Wight's site lists his other series.

  • Best for: readers who want an even longer series than HWFWM.
  • One caveat: 17 titles is a lot to catch up on.

In a thread asking for a long series like HWFWM with a main character who is neither "a cringe edgelord" nor "a goody two shoes", u/cfl2 answered: "Zac, MC of Defiance of the Fall, splits the difference very nicely." (comment, March 29, 2023).

  • Stat line: 7 titles on Audible. Book 1: narrated by Andrea Parsneau, 24 hours 53 minutes, Portal Books, 4.64 from 5,108 ratings.
  • Best for: readers who want a fighter rather than a mage, with long books.
  • One caveat: its first book is the longest on this list, still about four hours shorter than HWFWM book 1.

6= Chrysalis by RinoZ

  • Best for: readers who want a non-human hero, and Jeff Hays fans.
  • One caveat: the main character is an ant, which is the point but not for everyone.

8= Three series tied at 22 comments

  • Mage Tank by Cornman: named in 5 threads. Audible calls it "perfect for fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl"; 5 titles, book 1 narrated by Daniel Wisniewski (20 hours 37 minutes, 4.58 from 2,485 ratings).
  • Bog Standard Isekai by Miles English: named in 5 threads. Audible lists 5 titles; book 1, Scarred, is narrated by Johnathan McClain (17 hours 37 minutes, Shadow Alley Press, 4.75 from 1,459 ratings).

  • Why it made the list: 21 comments in 8 threads.
  • Stat line: Royal Road marks the web serial COMPLETED; Audible lists 4 books. Arc 1: narrated by Jack Voraces, 22 hours 55 minutes, Podium Audio, 4.61 from 3,783 ratings.
  • Best for: readers who want a story that is already finished.

  • Why it made the list: 20 comments in 7 threads.
  • Stat line: 5 titles on Audible. Book 1: narrated by Travis Baldree, 12 hours 35 minutes, Podium Audio, 4.82 from 9,055 ratings, the highest average of the 12 first books.
  • Best for: readers who want something gentler after HWFWM.
  • One caveat: it is a comedy first, not a fight-heavy series.

Honorable mentions

Next in the count: The Wandering Inn and The Perfect Run (19 each), Heretical Fishing (17) and System Universe (15). System Universe starts with System Change: on Audible it is narrated by Adam Verner (12 hours 29 minutes, Aethon Audio), and the Audible series page lists 9 titles.

Analysis: how these books compare with He Who Fights with Monsters

The main thing HWFWM readers ask for in these threads is length. Audible lists 13 HWFWM titles; four picks match or beat that: Defiance of the Fall (17), The Primal Hunter (15), The Path of Ascension (14) and Cradle (13 titles; the author counts 12 volumes). Noobtown (12) is close.

Chrysalis817 h 18 mJeff Hays, Annie Ellicott
Mother of Learning422 h 55 mJack Voraces

The first books are shorter. HWFWM book 1 runs 28 hours 56 minutes on Audible; the longest first book among the picks, Azarinth Healer, is 24 hours 53 minutes, and Cradle's is under 9 hours. If HWFWM's long opening book was the hardest part for you, every series here gets going in less listening time.

Narrators matter too, since many HWFWM fans listen rather than read. Travis Baldree reads four of the ranked first books (The Primal Hunter, Cradle, Mark of the Fool, Beware of Chicken). Our best LitRPG audiobooks list ranks these series by how often audiobook listeners name them.

GODEEPER: Came to HWFWM from Dungeon Crawler Carl, or the other way around? Our pillar list counts what DCC readers try next. Books Like Dungeon Crawler Carl: 10 Series Readers Recommend →

Which one should you pick?

  • Another very long series: The Primal Hunter (15 titles) or Defiance of the Fall (17).
  • An ending: Cradle (complete at 12 volumes) or Mother of Learning (completed on Royal Road).
  • A school setting: Mark of the Fool or Mother of Learning.
  • Comedy: Mage Tank or Beware of Chicken.
  • A quick start: Cradle (Unsouled, 8 h 52 m) or Beware of Chicken (12 h 35 m).
  • Something odd: Chrysalis, with an ant for a hero.

Our take

Based on the tally and the Audible data above, The Primal Hunter is the closest swap for most HWFWM readers: it is the most named by a wide margin, it is the second-longest series here on Audible (15 titles), and one narrator carries all of it, as Heath Miller does HWFWM. If what you liked was the length, Defiance of the Fall has the most titles of anything here. If you want something that ends, Cradle and Mother of Learning are the two picks with a stated finish. And if you have not tried Dungeon Crawler Carl yet, note that most posters in these threads already had it on their list.

How we checked this

On October 10, 2026 we read the comment data for 10 r/litrpg threads (January 2022 to August 2026) in which HWFWM readers asked what to read next, 640 top-level comments in all. We counted each comment once per series it named, using a fixed list of titles and short forms (including misspellings such as "Dungeon Crawl Carl" and first-book titles such as System Change); HWFWM never counted, and a series named in a thread's title or opening post did not count in that thread. For each ranked series we opened the Audible product page of book 1 (narrator, length, publisher, rating and rating count) and the Audible series page (number of titles). The thread list and per-thread counts are in our source file. We have not read these series; no reading experience here is ours. A site-agent then checked every number against our source table before publication, and its audit led us to correct the count.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I read after He Who Fights with Monsters? In 10 r/litrpg threads from HWFWM readers, the most named series were The Primal Hunter (75 comments), Cradle (50), Defiance of the Fall (41), Mark of the Fool (40) and The Path of Ascension (27). Start with The Primal Hunter if you want another long series with one narrator.

Is The Primal Hunter like He Who Fights with Monsters? Readers name it more than any other series: The Primal Hunter was named in 75 comments in our tally, the most of any series, and one reader wrote that people who like HWFWM usually enjoy it too. Both are long; Audible lists 15 Primal Hunter titles, all narrated by Travis Baldree.

Why is Dungeon Crawler Carl not on this list? Most HWFWM readers asking had already named it themselves. Dungeon Crawler Carl appeared in the title or opening post of 8 of the 10 threads, and we skip a series the poster already brought up. In the two remaining threads it drew only 3 comments.

Are there books like He Who Fights with Monsters on audiobook? Yes, all 12 picks have audiobooks on Audible. Travis Baldree narrates four of the first books (The Primal Hunter, Cradle, Mark of the Fool, Beware of Chicken), and Andrea Parsneau reads Azarinth Healer. HWFWM itself is read by Heath Miller, all 13 books.

Is there a finished series like He Who Fights with Monsters? Cradle is complete at 12 volumes according to Will Wight's site, and Mother of Learning is marked COMPLETED on Royal Road. We found no "complete" statement for the other picks; The Path of Ascension, for one, was still updating on Royal Road as of October 10, 2026.
