Step-by-Step: How to Read The Primal Hunter
1. Start with book 1: The Primal Hunter, 714 pages on Aethon's page or 20 hours 9 minutes on Audible.
2. Read books 2 to 16 by number: every title is just "The Primal Hunter" plus its number, so the order is printed on the cover.
3. Pick one format and check the gap: if you listen, you can only go to book 15 for now; book 16 had no Audible listing on October 10, 2026. If you read the ebooks, you can go to book 16.
4. Keep going on Royal Road if you want more: book 17 starts at chapter 1216 there (see below).
The Audiobooks
Travis Baldree narrates all 15 audiobooks on Audible, and Aethon Audio is the publisher on every one. Book 1's copyright line reads "©2022 Aethon Books (P)2022 Aethon Audio". The 15 lengths add up to 298 hours 14 minutes, just under 20 hours per book; the shortest is book 5 (17 hours 47 minutes), the longest book 11 (23 hours 31 minutes).
The release pattern has changed. Books 1 to 4 and book 8 came out on audio the same day as the ebook. Books 5 to 12 followed 55 to 99 days later. Books 13, 14 and 15 took 168, 189 and 147 days. Book 16's ebook was 73 days old when we checked, so on that pattern the audiobook is still a few months away; Audible had no listing or date for it.

After Book 16: Royal Road and Book 17
The series is still posted on Royal Road, where the page carries the label "Original STUB" and lists the schedule as "5 chapters a week." The page no longer lists most chapters: as of October 10, 2026 it shows chapters 1 to 8 (first posted September 19, 2020) and then chapters 1216 to 1400. Chapter 1216, posted December 9, 2025, is titled "The Bane of True Dragons - START OF BOOK 17", and chapter 1400 went up on October 9, 2026.
A reader in r/ThePrimalHunter, u/Flap_Grease, put the options this way on October 6, 2026: "There are a bunch of chapters on Royal Road for free, likely covering books 17-18. Patreon is 50 chapters ahead of that." (comment). That is a reader's estimate, not an official book split.

What Readers Say
In a September 20, 2026 r/litrpg thread titled "How the hell is Primal Hunter so consistently praised?", u/Knork14 answered that it "consistently delivers what its target audience actually wants: constant action and numbers going up" and called it "the literary equivalent of popcorn or french fries" (comment).
Tips Before You Start
- Ebook readers are ahead of listeners. If you mix formats, note that book 16 had no Audible listing when we checked.
- Goodreads stays high. Every book from 2 to 16 averages 4.45 or more; book 1 is the lowest at 4.23.
- Spoilers: the subreddit discusses the Royal Road chapters, which run past book 16. Some thread titles carry a flag such as "Contains spoilers up to book 16"; heed them.
Our take
Based on the facts above, The Primal Hunter is easy to follow in order and long without being bloated per book: about 20 hours per audiobook and, on average, a new ebook about every three and a half months since March 2022. The catch for listeners is the widening audio gap; to get past book 15 right now you need the book 16 ebook, and after that the Royal Road chapters (or, per the reader we quote, Patreon, which runs further ahead). The r/litrpg answer we quote sums the series up as "constant action and numbers going up", so if you want plot-heavy fantasy, try book 1 before you commit to sixteen.
How we checked this
On October 10, 2026 we opened the Aethon product page for each of the 16 books (publisher, page count, publication date, narrator and duration fields), Amazon's pages for books 1 to 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 13, the Audible series page and each Audible product page (narrator, length, release date), the Goodreads search listing for the series (pages 1 and 2), the Royal Road fiction page (status, schedule, chapter list) and an r/ThePrimalHunter search listing. The Reddit quotes were copied from the thread data. Totals and day counts are our own arithmetic. A site-agent then compared every number in this article with our source table and re-opened the key pages; the lines it flagged were fixed before publication.
