Reading Order
Arcane Ascension Reading Order: 6 Books and Rowe's Universe

Here is the Arcane Ascension reading order: six books by Andrew Rowe, from Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Kindle, February 26, 2017) to A Brief History of Chronomancy (Kindle, April 2, 2025). Below is each book's Kindle date and page count, the Nick Podehl audiobook length and the ratings, plus where Rowe's two other series in the same world fit, all checked on October 11, 2026. No spoilers past the book 1 blurb.
TL;DR: Read the six books in this order: Sufficiently Advanced Magic, On the Shoulders of Titans, The Torch That Ignites the Stars, The Silence of Unworthy Gods, When Wizards Follow Fools, A Brief History of Chronomancy. That is 3,550 Kindle pages or 118 hours 43 minutes on Audible. The War of Broken Mirrors and Weapons and Wielders share the world but are optional. No book 7 is listed on Amazon or Audible yet.
Key Takeaways
- 6 books, one order: Amazon, Audible and Goodreads list the same six titles; the Kindle subtitles carry the number ("Arcane Ascension Book 1").
- One narrator: Nick Podehl reads all six for Podium Audio, 118 hours 43 minutes by our sum.
- Ebook first, audio later: each audiobook came out 87 to 246 days after the Kindle edition.
- Two optional companion series: The War of Broken Mirrors (3 books) and Weapons and Wielders (4 books) are set in the same universe; writing about one Weapons and Wielders book, the author says the other books are not required to understand it.
- No book 7 listing: nothing on Amazon, Audible or Goodreads after book 6 as of October 11, 2026.
Overview
Arcane Ascension is a progression fantasy series by Andrew Rowe. Audible's summary of book 1 opens: "Five years ago Corin Cadence's brother entered the Serpent Spire - a colossal tower with ever-shifting rooms, traps, and monsters." The audiobooks are published by Podium Audio; the Kindle pages we checked show no publisher line.
It keeps coming up in reader threads: 38 of the 4,433 comments in our saved data mention it, across 20 of the 43 threads. One reader quoted below compares it with Mother of Learning and Mark of the Fool. It is not a web serial: a Royal Road search for the title turns up only an unrelated story.

Every Arcane Ascension Book in Order
"Kindle" is the publication date and print length on each book's Amazon Kindle page; "Audible" is the audiobook release date and length. Ratings were read on Audible and on the Goodreads series page on October 11, 2026, and will drift.
| # | Title | Kindle | Pages | Audible | Length | Audible rating | Goodreads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sufficiently Advanced Magic | Feb 26, 2017 | 625 | Jul 4, 2017 | 21 h 58 m | 4.58 (35,346) | 4.10 (28,291) |

| 3 | The Torch That Ignites the Stars | Dec 6, 2020 | 564 | May 11, 2021 | 17 h 21 m | 4.69 (9,781) | 4.12 (9,380) |
| 4 | The Silence of Unworthy Gods | Oct 1, 2022 | 630 | Dec 27, 2022 | 20 h 43 m | 4.69 (6,021) | 4.27 (6,447) |
| 5 | When Wizards Follow Fools | Sep 12, 2024 | 540 | Apr 8, 2025 | 19 h 25 m | 4.70 (1,139) | 4.33 (4,013) |
| 6 | A Brief History of Chronomancy | Apr 2, 2025 | 449 | Jul 22, 2025 | 14 h 30 m | 4.81 (2,299) | 4.40 (3,000) |
The Kindle titles add the number, for example Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension Book 1), and Amazon's series box reads "Book 1 of 6" through "Book 6 of 6". On the Shoulders of Titans is the longest book (742 pages, 24 hours 46 minutes); A Brief History of Chronomancy the shortest (449 pages, 14 hours 30 minutes). The six books add up to 3,550 Kindle pages, about 592 per book.
Goodreads ratings rise over the series, from 4.10 for book 1 to 4.40 for book 6, with a dip at book 3 (4.12), while the number of raters falls from 28,291 to 3,000. As in most long series, the people rating book 6 are the ones who stayed for five books, so read the rise with that in mind.

Step-by-Step: How to Read Arcane Ascension
1. Start with Sufficiently Advanced Magic: 625 Kindle pages, or 21 hours 58 minutes on Audible. It is the most rated book in the series on every site we checked (35,346 Audible ratings).
2. Read books 2 to 6 by number: On the Shoulders of Titans, The Torch That Ignites the Stars, The Silence of Unworthy Gods, When Wizards Follow Fools, A Brief History of Chronomancy. Goodreads counts 6 primary and 6 total works, so it lists nothing else inside the series to slot in between.
3. Add the companion series only if you want more of the world: see the next section. We found nothing saying the main story depends on them.
4. Keep track on the series page: the Arcane Ascension series page lists every book with a checklist for the ones you have finished.
Andrew Rowe's Universe: The Other Two Series
Rowe has written two more series in the same world. On his Goodreads blog he says Weapons and Wielders "takes place in the same universe as my War of Broken Mirrors and Arcane Ascension books", and gives this order: "Chronologically, the books follow this order: The War of Broken Mirrors, Weapons and Wielders, Arcane Ascension."
| Series | Books (Goodreads) | Years | Goodreads ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| The War of Broken Mirrors | Forging Divinity, Stealing Sorcery, Defying Destiny | 2015 to 2019 | 3.92, 4.11, 4.22 |
| Weapons and Wielders | Six Sacred Swords, Diamantine, Soulbrand, Flowbreaker | 2019 to 2026 | 4.16, 4.40, 4.46, 4.48 |
Chronological order is not the same as a reading order. Rowe has called Six Sacred Swords "my prequel to Sufficiently Advanced Magic", but in his January 17, 2020 post about Diamantine he notes that the book's frame story "takes place much later than the main story, and after the second book of Arcane Ascension", and that "Reading those other books isn't required to understand this one, but it may be beneficial to get everything possible out of the story."
That gives two sensible paths:
- Publication-style path: finish Arcane Ascension, or at least its first two books, then read Weapons and Wielders and The War of Broken Mirrors as side trips. This is the path that matches Rowe's note about Diamantine.
- World-chronology path: War of Broken Mirrors, Weapons and Wielders, then Arcane Ascension. It follows the author's timeline, but it puts the lowest Goodreads average of the 13 books in the three series (Forging Divinity, 3.92) first.
The newest of these books is Flowbreaker, Weapons and Wielders book 4. Rowe's blog post of September 4, 2026 says "my fourth Weapons & Wielders book, Flowbreaker, is out today." Goodreads also credits Mallory Reaves on the Weapons and Wielders series.

The Audiobooks
Nick Podehl narrates all six Arcane Ascension books for Podium Audio. By our sum of Audible's lengths the series runs 118 hours 43 minutes, an average of about 19 hours 47 minutes per book. On the Shoulders of Titans is the longest at 24 hours 46 minutes and A Brief History of Chronomancy the shortest at 14 hours 30 minutes. Rowe's blog also points listeners to the Six Sacred Swords audiobook, "narrated by the fantastic Nick Podehl".
The audio has always trailed the ebook. By our count the gaps were 128 days for book 1, 246 for book 2, 156 for book 3, 87 for book 4, 208 for book 5 and 111 for book 6. If you listen rather than read, the Audible date in the table is the one to plan around.
The Audible ratings sit between 4.58 and 4.81 as of October 11, 2026. When Wizards Follow Fools has far fewer Audible ratings (1,139) than the book after it (2,299); we did not find a reason on its page, so treat its average with that in mind.
Is There an Arcane Ascension Book 7?
Here is what the sources showed on October 11, 2026:
- Amazon: A Brief History of Chronomancy is "Book 6 of 6". No book 7 page or pre-order.
- Audible: "6 books in series".
- Goodreads: "6 primary works • 6 total works"; the author page lists "Arcane Ascension (6 books)".
- Andrew Rowe's blog: the latest post (September 4, 2026) is about Flowbreaker and does not mention Arcane Ascension.
- Risingshadow (a book database): an "Arcane Ascension Book 7" page says "Publication is tentatively expected in 2027." (wording rechecked October 18, 2026). Its series description names a different hero than the Audible and Goodreads blurbs (which follow Corin Cadence), so we do not treat it as reliable.
So there is no official book 7 date. Book 6 came out on Kindle 557 days before our check; earlier gaps between Kindle releases ran from 202 to 937 days. We also found no statement that the series is finished, so treat it as open.

What Readers Say
One piece of advice is to give book 1 time. u/Arturo_Laurel, in an October 2025 r/litrpg thread: "Just fyi, you have to push past the 1st book for both cradle and arcane ascension, its just how they are, they get their rhythms after book 1" (comment, October 7, 2025).
Some readers who know the wider universe recommend all of it. u/D_R_Ethridge wrote that "Arcane Ascension is a comp to Mother of Learning and Mark of the Fool but with an enchanted as the focus, and War if Broken Mirrors is a classic progression fantasy stomp around. Both are good in their own way, have uos and downs, but all have fantastic audio narration so are worth the price of admission IMO" (comment, October 25, 2025).
The cross-series order is what confuses people. u/Captain-Fishman put it this way: "There's several series that intermingle with that and are quite good. I have the reading order somewhere. Has you bouncing around a bit, but well worth it." (comment, June 21, 2025).
Tips Before You Start
- Stick to the six main books first. The side series are optional extras in the same world.
- Mind the format dates. If you read on Kindle you get each book months before the audiobook.
- Book 1 is the long haul. At 21 hours 58 minutes it is the second longest of the six, and a reader quoted above says the series finds its rhythm after it.
- Spoilers: later blurbs give away earlier plot turns. Read only the blurb of the book you are about to start.
Our take
Based on the facts above, Arcane Ascension is easy to read in order and harder to read around. The main series is six numbered books with one narrator, and every store agrees on the order. The complication is the wider universe: two more series, a chronological order from the author that differs from publication order, and a note from Rowe that one of the side books does not need the others. Our reading of those sources: read the six main books, then pick up Weapons and Wielders if you want more. If you came here from books like Cradle and want a school-magic series that is already finished, our Mark of the Fool reading order covers a ten-book series with an ending; Arcane Ascension has no book 7 date and no statement that it is done.
How we checked this
On October 11, 2026 we opened the Audible series page and the Audible product data for all six audiobooks; the Amazon Kindle pages for all six ebooks; the Goodreads series pages for Arcane Ascension, The War of Broken Mirrors and Weapons and Wielders, three book pages and the author page; two posts on Andrew Rowe's Goodreads blog (January 17, 2020 and September 4, 2026); the Risingshadow series and book 7 pages; and Royal Road's search. Reader comments were copied from Reddit thread data saved on October 10, 2026. Totals, averages and day counts are our own arithmetic. A site-agent then compared every number in this article with our source table before publication.
