The best LitRPG audiobooks are the ones listeners keep naming when someone asks what to play next, so we counted. We read 13 Reddit threads from r/litrpg and r/ProgressionFantasy in which audiobook listeners asked for recommendations, 1,569 top-level comments in all, and tallied every series they named. Below are the 12 most named, each with its book 1 narrator, length and Audible rating as of October 10, 2026. No plot spoilers beyond each book's official blurb.

TL;DR: Dungeon Crawler Carl leads by a wide margin (150 comments), then The Primal Hunter (76), He Who Fights with Monsters (74), Cradle (66) and The Wandering Inn (57). Three narrators read 7 of the 12 first books: Travis Baldree, Jeff Hays and Andrea Parsneau. If you want a short first listen, start with Cradle (8 h 52 m) or Dungeon Crawler Carl (13 h 31 m).

Key Takeaways

  • Most named: Dungeon Crawler Carl, in 150 of 1,569 comments, roughly double the second place.
  • Most rated on Audible: Dungeon Crawler Carl book 1 again, 4.84 from 71,299 ratings; He Who Fights with Monsters book 1 is next with 48,359.
  • Narrators that repeat: Travis Baldree reads three of the 12 first books, Jeff Hays and Andrea Parsneau two each.
  • Long listens: seven of the 12 first books run past 20 hours; The Wandering Inn book 1 is 48 hours 7 minutes.
  • Short starts: Unsouled (Cradle) at 8 hours 52 minutes and Dungeon Crawler Carl at 13 hours 31 minutes.

Overview: how we ranked the best LitRPG audiobooks

Most "best LitRPG audiobooks" lists are one person's picks. We wanted a measure a reader can check. On October 10, 2026 we pulled the full comment data for 13 threads in which the poster said they listen on audio and asked what to try next, posted between July 26, 2025 and July 24, 2026. Titles include "Audiobook listener need a suggestion for next", "Looking for audiobook recommendations" and "To Audiobook listeners: Is there something better than Dungeon Crawler Carl?".

We counted each top-level comment once per series it named, by title or common short form (for example "DCC" or "PoA"). One rule matters: a series named in a thread's title or opening post was not counted in that thread, since the poster had already brought it up. That is why Dungeon Crawler Carl was counted in only 8 of the 13 threads and still came first.

Then we opened the Audible page of each series' first book for narrator, length, release date, publisher and the rating shown, and each Audible series page for the number of titles. We have not listened to these series ourselves; the ranking is the listeners', the facts are Audible's. The table below is the short version.

7. The Perfect Run by Maxime J. Durand

Audiobook cover of The Perfect Run, a figure in a purple coat and top hat under neon city signs Cover: Audible product page (Podium Audio)

  • What it is: a superhero time-loop story. The blurb: Ryan "Quicksave" Romano "can create a save-point in time and redo his life whenever he dies."

  • One caveat: the blurb's world of "sponsored heroes, super-powered criminals, and true monsters" is a superhero setting more than a game system.

u/Garreousbear explained the pick: "The Perfect Run has a really good audiobook." The same comment adds that "The narrator does a good job of capturing the main characters humour." (comment, July 1, 2026).

Analysis: what the best LitRPG audiobooks have in common

The clearest pattern is the narrator. Three voices read 7 of the 12 first books: Travis Baldree (The Primal Hunter, Cradle, Mark of the Fool, plus Beware of Chicken in the honorable mentions), Jeff Hays (Dungeon Crawler Carl, and Chrysalis together with Annie Ellicott) and Andrea Parsneau (The Wandering Inn and Azarinth Healer). Listeners notice. One answer in a "Seeking Audiobook Recommendations" thread was simply: "Just search audible for Travis Baldree as narrator and be done" (u/Bleenfoo, comment, October 5, 2025).

The second pattern is length. Seven of the 12 first books run past 20 hours, and only two are under 15: Unsouled (8 h 52 m) and Dungeon Crawler Carl (13 h 31 m). If you are testing whether the genre works for you on audio, those two cost the least time. The Wandering Inn sits at the other end: its first book alone (48 h 7 m) is longer than the first three Dungeon Crawler Carl books together (41 h 53 m on Audible).

Third, the publishers. Six of the 12 first books carry the Aethon Audio label (The Primal Hunter, Mage Tank, Defiance of the Fall, Chrysalis, Mark of the Fool, The Path of Ascension). Three are Podium Audio (He Who Fights with Monsters, The Wandering Inn, The Perfect Run), two list Audible Studios as publisher (Dungeon Crawler Carl and Unsouled), and one is Portal Books (Azarinth Healer).

Last, the rating counts tell you how big a series' audience is, not how good it is. Dungeon Crawler Carl and He Who Fights with Monsters have far more ratings than the others (71,299 and 48,359 for book 1), while Chrysalis, The Path of Ascension and The Perfect Run have about 2,000 each, with averages from 4.56 to 4.72. A small count with a high average is a reasonable bet, with more uncertainty.

If you came here from a books-like list, the overlap is large: most of these series also show up in our books like Dungeon Crawler Carl tally, and in our books like He Who Fights with Monsters count.

Best LitRPG audiobooks by what you want

  • A short first listen: Cradle (Unsouled, 8 h 52 m) or Dungeon Crawler Carl (13 h 31 m).
  • One narrator for a very long series: He Who Fights with Monsters (13 titles, Heath Miller) or The Wandering Inn (20 titles, Andrea Parsneau).
  • Travis Baldree: The Primal Hunter, Cradle, Mark of the Fool or Beware of Chicken.
  • Jeff Hays outside Dungeon Crawler Carl: Chrysalis, with Annie Ellicott.
  • Comedy: Mage Tank, which Audible itself pitches at Dungeon Crawler Carl fans.
  • A short series: The Perfect Run, 3 titles on Audible.
  • Something new each month: our new LitRPG books for October 2026 list covers this month's releases.

Our take

Based on the tally and the Audible data above, Dungeon Crawler Carl is the safe first pick: it leads the listener count by a wide margin, has the most Audible ratings of the 12, and its first book is one of the two shortest here. If you have heard it, the choice depends on what you liked. For the voice, try Chrysalis (Jeff Hays and Annie Ellicott). For a narrator you can follow across series, Travis Baldree's three entries are the easiest path. He Who Fights with Monsters and The Wandering Inn suit listeners who want months of audio from one narrator, with the caveat that their first books run 29 and 48 hours. Mage Tank is the pick to watch: newest of the 12, named in 12 of the 13 threads, with 5 titles on Audible so far.

How we checked this

On October 10, 2026 we read the comment data for 13 Reddit threads (9 in r/litrpg, 4 in r/ProgressionFantasy) in which audiobook listeners asked for recommendations, 1,569 top-level comments in all. We counted each comment once per series it named, using a fixed list of titles and short forms, and skipped a series in any thread whose title or opening post already named it. For each of the 12 series we opened the Audible product page of book 1 (narrator, length, release date, publisher, rating and rating count from the page data) and the Audible series page (number of titles). The thread list, search terms and per-thread counts are in our source file. We have not listened to these audiobooks; no listening experience here is ours. A site-agent then checked every number in this article against the source table before publication.
