He Who Fights with Monsters Reading Order: All 13 Books

9 min readLast reviewed By LevelUpShelf EditorialUpdated today
Aethon covers of He Who Fights with Monsters books 1, 6, 10 and 13 side by side on a cream background

The He Who Fights with Monsters reading order is simple: the 13 books by number, from book 1 (March 9, 2021) to book 13, which came out on October 6, 2026. Shirtaloon (Travis Deverell) still posts the story as a web serial on Royal Road, so the series is not finished. Below: every book with its Aethon publication date and page count, the Audible length (Heath Miller reads all 13) and the Goodreads rating as of October 10, 2026. No plot spoilers.

TL;DR: Read books 1 to 13 in number order. Book 13 came out October 6, 2026. Heath Miller narrates every audiobook; the 13 add up to about 292 hours. The new hardcovers called Outworlder, Adventurer, Hero and Home are books 1 to 4 in a new edition, not new books.

Key Takeaways

  • 13 books as of October 10, 2026: Amazon's book 13 page says "Book 13 of 13", Audible's series page says "13 books in series".
  • Book 13 is new: ebook and audiobook both dated October 6, 2026 on Aethon's product page.
  • One narrator: Heath Miller on all 13 Audible editions (Podium Audio), 292 hours 8 minutes in total by our sum.
  • Long books: 512 to 797 pages each on Aethon's pages, 8,557 pages for all 13.
  • Still ongoing: Royal Road shows chapters 1025 to 1027 posted September 28 to October 2, 2026.

Overview

He Who Fights with Monsters (often shortened to HWFWM) is a LitRPG series by Shirtaloon, credited on Royal Road as "Shirtaloon (Travis Deverell)" and on Audible as Shirtaloon and Travis Deverell. The official blurb opens: "Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters." The ebooks carry Aethon's name on its product pages, and the audiobooks are published by Podium Audio on Audible.

Readers coming from Dungeon Crawler Carl name it often: in our tally of five Reddit threads it was in 81 top-level comments, second only to Cradle (see our books like Dungeon Crawler Carl list). It also splits readers; one calls it "the most divisive series in the community" (see "What readers say").

Dates and page counts are the "Publication Date" and "Page Count" fields on each book's Aethon product page. Audible lengths come from each Audible product page; every audiobook came out the same day as the ebook. Goodreads figures are from its search listing on October 10, 2026 ("k" means thousand ratings).

Step-by-Step: How to Read HWFWM

1. Start with book 1: He Who Fights with Monsters, 680 pages on Aethon's page or 28 hours 56 minutes on Audible. It is the longest audiobook in the series, so the start is the biggest single commitment.

2. Decide early whether Jason works for you: the top-voted reader answer we quote below says the series "hinges on how annoying you find the mc". Book 1 has the lowest Goodreads average of the 13 (4.33); every later book sits between 4.44 and 4.57.

3. Read books 2 to 12 in number order: they came out between May 18, 2021 and May 20, 2025, and each Audible edition was released the same day as the ebook.

4. Finish with book 13: out October 6, 2026, 797 pages, the longest book by page count.

5. Then decide on Royal Road: the story keeps going there as a web serial (see "After book 13" below).

The Audiobooks

Heath Miller narrates every book, and Audible lists Podium Audio as the publisher for all 13. Book 1's copyright line reads "©2021 Shirtaloon (P)2021 Podium Audio"; book 13's reads "©2026 Travis Deverell (P)2026 Podium Audio". On Audible, each audiobook's release date matches the ebook date on Aethon, from March 9, 2021 for book 1 to October 6, 2026 for book 13.

The 13 lengths add up to 292 hours 8 minutes, or about 22 hours per book. The shortest is book 6 (15 hours 49 minutes), the longest book 1 (28 hours 56 minutes). For scale, Matt Dinniman's eight Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks run about 159 hours in total (see our Dungeon Crawler Carl reading order).

The New Hardcovers: Same Books, New Names

If you search Amazon you will also see titles like He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 1: Outworlder. These are new hardcover editions of the existing books, not new entries in the series. As of October 10, 2026, Amazon lists:

  • Book 1: Outworlder, July 7, 2026, 768 pages, publisher shown as "AETHON: Vault". Its description says the edition comes "with a bonus short story exclusive to this deluxe hardcover edition".
  • Book 2: Adventurer, September 8, 2026.
  • Book 3: Hero, November 17, 2026.
  • Book 4: Home, February 9, 2027.

The numbering is the same as the ebooks and audiobooks, so the reading order does not change. Amazon also shows German editions (for example Das Versprechen der Macht, Band 3); those are translations, not extra books.

After Book 13: Royal Road

The series began on Royal Road, and the fiction page still carries it with the label "Original STUB". Most chapters are no longer on the page: as of October 10, 2026 it shows chapters 1 to 13 and then chapters 1025 to 1027, posted between September 28 and October 2, 2026 (UTC). An author announcement on the page reads "Book 13 chapters (tp to 1024) coming down in a couple of days."

The page notes "Book 12 starts with chapter 883" and gives the posting schedule as "Mon-Wed-Fri, USA timezone". It also links to the author's Patreon. The announcement says the book 13 chapters, up to 1024, were coming down; the chapters now on the page start again at 1025. When we checked, Aethon had no page for a book 14 and Amazon's book 13 page said "Book 13 of 13", so there is no date yet for the next book.

What Readers Say

In an r/litrpg thread from July 7, 2026 where a reader who had just started book 1 asked what to expect, the highest-scored of the 235 top-level replies when we read the thread, from u/tmccart3, was: "I think the consensus on this series is that it hinges on how annoying you find the mc." (comment).

In an April 2, 2026 r/litrpg thread titled "He who fights with monsters… what am I missing?", u/DagothUrGigaChad wrote: "It's the most divisive series in the community. People either love it or really don't like it." (comment).

Tips Before You Start

  • Go by the number. Book 1's Aethon ebook title is just He Who Fights with Monsters; the subtitles (Outworlder, Adventurer, Hero, Home) come with the new hardcover editions.
  • Budget the time. At 512 to 797 pages per book, the 13 books are about 8,557 pages; on audio, about 292 hours.
  • Spoilers: posts in r/HWFWM already discuss book 13 (one from October 8, 2026 is titled "Very mild spoiler below for book 13"), and the Royal Road chapters run past it. Stay off both until you have caught up.

Our take

Based on the facts above, HWFWM is a straightforward series to read in order: 13 numbered books, one narrator, and a new book out this month (October 6, 2026). The real question is whether you will like the lead, and that shows up early: book 1 is the longest audiobook and has the lowest Goodreads average, and the top-voted reader answer we quote says the series hinges on the main character. Give book 1 a fair run; if Jason still grates by the end of it, the 12 books after it are a lot of hours to spend. If you enjoy him, you have about 292 hours of audio and a live web serial ahead.

How we checked this

On October 10, 2026 we opened the Aethon product page for each of the 13 books (publisher, page count, publication date, narrator and duration fields), the Audible series page and each book's Audible product page (narrator, length, release date), Amazon's pages for book 13 and the book 1 and book 3 hardcovers plus an Amazon search for the hardcover editions, the Goodreads search listing for the series, the Royal Road fiction page (status, chapter list, announcements) and an r/HWFWM search listing. The Reddit quotes were copied from the thread data. Totals are our own sums. A site-agent then compared every number in this article with our source table and re-opened the key pages; the lines it flagged were fixed before publication.
