The Mark of the Fool reading order is ten numbered books by J.M. Clarke, from Mark of the Fool (September 20, 2022) to Mark of the Fool 10 (July 30, 2025), and the series is finished: the author called book 10's audiobook "the final audiobook for MARK OF THE FOOL". Below are the dates, page counts and Travis Baldree's audiobook lengths for each book, plus where the light novel, the webtoon and the spin-off fit, as of October 10, 2026. No spoilers past the book 1 blurb.

TL;DR: Read books 1 to 10 in order. All ten are out in ebook and audio, read by Travis Baldree, about 207 hours in total. The series is complete. The light novel (part of book 1) and the webtoon are optional extras.

Step-by-Step: How to Read Mark of the Fool

1. Start with book 1: Mark of the Fool, 698 pages on Aethon's page or 19 hours on Audible.

2. Read books 2 to 10 in number order: Audible and Aethon list no in-between novellas.

3. Treat the light novel and webtoon as extras: the author says the light novel "is not new material, this is part of book 1 but now with Light Novel illustrations".

4. Try the author's other series afterwards: Oaths and I Am Become Death are separate stories (see below).

The Audiobooks

Travis Baldree narrates all ten audiobooks on Audible, published by Aethon Audio. They add up to 206 hours 55 minutes, about 20 hours 41 minutes per book; the shortest is book 8 (16 hours 14 minutes) and the longest book 10 (23 hours 22 minutes).

Listeners who joined late have no gaps left to wait out, but the release pattern changed over time. Books 1 to 3 came out on audio the same day as the ebook. From book 4 on, audio followed months later: 98 days for book 4, then 139 to 231 days for books 6 to 10 (book 5 has no ebook date to compare). The author's announcement for the last one: "Quite the wait. But even if we take our time, we always deliver in the end."

Baldree also reads the whole of Cradle and The Primal Hunter (see our Cradle series reading order and Primal Hunter reading order), so if his voice is the reason you are here, both are long, finished or ongoing options.

Light Novel, Webtoon and Spin-Offs

  • Light novel: announced on Royal Road on May 21, 2025 as the first volume, covering part of book 1 with illustrations.
  • Webtoon: launched April 2, 2026 on Webtoon, adapted by a team with the author's consultation; he names Kisai Entertainment as the art studio.
  • Oaths: a separate J.M. Clarke series launched September 23, 2025. In his words: "It's also set in the same universe as my other series, though a different planet."
  • I Am Become Death: another J.M. Clarke series, launched March 20, 2025 per his Royal Road note. Not part of the Mark of the Fool numbering.

What Readers Say

In an April 2026 r/litrpg thread from a reader looking for something like HWFWM or The Primal Hunter, u/MacTwistee wrote: "I just finished mark of the fool. I think it is not recommended enough." (comment, April 29, 2026). In a February 2026 thread for audiobook listeners, the reply from u/Dodger7777 was simply "Mark of the Fool might be something you'll like." (comment).

Tips Before You Start

  • It has an ending. Ten books, both formats complete, which is rarer than it should be in this genre.
  • Royal Road is not the full story. The page is a stub: it keeps chapters 1 to 7 (posted March and April 2021) and then the author's announcements.
  • Mind the later book lengths. Books 9 and 10 are the two longest on Aethon's pages (839 and 963 pages).
  • Spoilers: reader threads about books 9 and 10 discuss the ending; avoid them until you get there.

Our take

Based on the facts above, Mark of the Fool is one of the easiest recommendations in this cluster for someone who wants a finished series: ten books, one narrator, and the author's own word that book 10 is the end. At about 207 hours of audio it is roughly half the 398 hours of Defiance of the Fall (see our reading order), and the ratings stay high from first book to last on Audible. The light novel and webtoon are worth knowing about only if you want book 1 again in a new form. If you liked Travis Baldree in Cradle, this is a natural next listen.

How we checked this

On October 10, 2026 we opened the Aethon product page for each book that has one (publication date, page count, narrator), Amazon's Kindle pages for books 3 and 4, the Audible product page for each of the ten audiobooks and the Audible series page, the Goodreads series page, and the Royal Road fiction page with its chapter list, including the author's posts on the book 10 ebook and audio, the light novel, the webtoon and Oaths. The Reddit comments were copied from thread data we saved that day. Totals and day counts are our own arithmetic. A site-agent then compared every number in this article with our source table and re-opened the key pages; the lines it flagged were fixed before publication.
